A Storytelling Journey to the Time of the Bedouins, Grade 4, Unit 2

Identity and the change in Bedouin culture, lifestyle and identify from 1950’s to present-day UAE.

Grade 4, Unit 2

Unit 2 leads students through the changes Bedouins faced due to modernization when the United Arab Emirates was created.Suggested sequencing is as follows: Each week students read one story, completes one activity that correlates with the story, and work on the final project. Stories remain grade-level appropriate and are written and meant to be used as core learning materials. Each story has a related activity and require prior interaction or familiarity with the stories to satisfactorily complete.

Session Goal: Student will be able to identify how Bedouin jobs have changed.

What kind of jobs do you think Bedouins are working in today? Pearl-diving, date palm tree farming, agriculture, camel racing?  Pretend you are a Bedouin teenager living in Abu Dhabi. What type of jobs will you have? What does your every day life look like?

You are an architect living in Sharjah. Your job is to design the perfect house for a Bedouin. Look at Bedouin tents – what are distinguishing characters about the Bedouin tents? Bedouins liked open-air, liked to sit outside the tent and have festivals, sit under the stars.

Formative Assessment Activity: Nabati and Bedouin Poetry

Write a poem about the history of each of the Emirates and how it’s connected to Bedouin tribes. Words and linkages for the poem will be provided.
