Chance Academy: Community Based School

Now celebrating its 10th year, Chance Academy’s educational program reimagines education.
Focusing on social, emotional learning, the whole-child and arts-based integration, Chance Academy runs a daytime educational program for kids ages 3-17. This will become Chance Academy’s permanent home.
Digital Storytelling Lab: Workshops, Camps and More

Complete with equipment and multi-media devices, the Digital Storytelling Lab will offer workshops, services and events for families, adults and kids.
Families can create interactive and digital family trees. Kids can attend STEM and digital storytelling camp during the summer and school year.
Venue Space: For Camps, Programs, Adults & Kids

Use the space for camps, after-school programming, birthday parties, family gatherings, private events and more.

MEET THE TEAM

Anna Bernanke
Founder and Director, Chance Academy
A seasoned bilingual education leader, Anna holds 30 years of diverse and varied teaching experience ranging from pre-kindergarten to college level. Experienced in teaching, developing Social, Emotional Learning curricula education administration and management, and visionary leadership, Anna is also Founder and Director of Chance Academy. Chance Academy, serving families from Prince George’s County and Washington, DC for 10 years now, is a community-based educational program focused on social, emotional, community empowerment and academic learning.
Recognized for her fluency in Spanish, Anna holds a Superior Rating from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and was selected to participate in structuring Foreign Languages Standards for the District of Columbia. Anna is trained in Mind Body Medicine, is a regular speaker and guest on local television and radio shows, was featured as a speaker for the Jump$tart Coalition and served as the Keynote Speaker for the 2017 Gateway Community Development Corporation 20th Anniversary Gala (located in the Greater Washington, DC area).
A former Foreign Language Department Chair in both private and public schools, Anna is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a MA in Latin American Literature from Stanford University. Anna was born in Rome, Italy, and raised in Denver, Colorado.

Geeta Raj
Founder and President, Global Sleepover
Geeta brings almost 20 years of experience in international development and humanitarian assistance to The Global Sleepover, including over 9 years as a Senior Program Analyst with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Geeta’s experiences working and living in Afghanistan, Egypt, South Sudan, South Africa, Colombia, the U.K., Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova influenced her as an entrepreneur to found and grow The Global Sleepover.
Geeta is an Enterprise Artist and Resident at the Gateway Media Arts Lab, which is also the permanent home and headquarters to Global Sleepover. Geeta’s experience ranges from: entrepreneurship, creative direction and design, interactive and multi-media technology, creative writing, international development project implementation and management, and cultural, global and literacy education. A 2003 graduate of the Presidential Management Fellowship program in Washington, DC and a 2011-2012 Innovation Fellow with ConvergeUS, Geeta is a two-time recipient of the Washington, DC Commission on the Arts Folk and Traditional Arts Grant and speaks Hindi, Urdu, and basic Spanish. Geeta holds a BA in Creative Writing from University of Houston and a MA in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University in Washington, DC.
Geeta learned about the unequivocal power of education through her father. A refugee from an ethnic partition in India in 1947, he overcame economic and social adversity through earning five higher education degrees – truly transformative education. This is Geeta’s motivation behind community education and Global Sleepover – harnessing the power of technology to make education more accessible to children who have least access.

Kevin Simpson
Founder and Executive Director, KDSL Global
As a senior consultant in Global Education, Kevin promotes global partnerships with schools, libraries and individuals working in international education. Kevin runs KDSL Global, a boutique education consultancy promoting education leadership, teacher involvement and student growth through international partnerships. KDSL Global is an education consulting company launched by Kevin in 2016 in the USA and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Simpson and his team have served thousands of schools, organizations, educators, and leaders worldwide in over 20 countries. The majority of this work in education has centered on American curriculum schools. Since 2008, Simpson has been focused on education in the MENA region, assisted numerous schools with accreditation, training, development, and served as a thought partner to investors on school start-up projects. Simpson is co-founder of the UAE Learning Network (one of the largest online network of educators in the UAE) and leads the GCC ASCD Connected Community. In addition, he has co-authored papers on American curriculum in the MENA region with a focus on Common Core State Standards, the Next Generation Science Standards, social studies, the arts, and the history of American Education in the UAE. He also owns KDSL USA which was set up in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University (USA). Simpson is the founder of the Association of International Educators and Leaders of Color.

Michelle Darden Lee
Michelle brings 20 years of experience in marketing, communications, small business and community development to the Global Learning Center. She is currently Executive Director of the Gateway Media Arts Lab and President of Mingus Communications. Throughout her career, Michelle has combined her communications expertise with her commitment to community empowerment and has ushered in initiatives that expand opportunities in education, business development and politics. Michelle holds a B.S. in Political Science from Hampton University

Danian Douglas
Video Storytelling and Film Making Expert and Advisor
MC1 Danian C Douglas is a camera operator and video storyteller, most recently assigned to Defense Media Activity (DMA) HQ at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. As a camera operator and video storytelling, Danian communicates strategic themes and messages, command information products and news, sports and entertainment services to the entire Department of Defense family and external audience via TV, radio, web and mobile apps to an audience of more than 4 million.
MC1 Douglas is a native of Trinidad and migrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1995 and enlisted in the Navy in September 2008. After completing basic training, he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy as an undesignated deck seaman aboard a yard patrol vessel, serving the academy’s mission to train the Navy’s future leaders.
Danian’s work has been recognized. Notable recognition includes: ranking 3rd Place in the Short Film – Cinematography category at the 2018 NYC Indie Film Festival; receiving 1st Place at the 2018 Navy Video Series Navy Media Awards in 2019. Watch the winning video here.
